    1. We’re changing our parties to be an invited event, though with the intent to invite as widely as is practical. If you wish to be on this list, please let us know your preferred email address. If you have a partner or other significant person who should also be on this list, please send us their email address.

    2. Here’s a link to our party rules & policies as of Aug 1:

    Further to the Party Situation
Shira is now attempting to deny that she made a threat to bring the police to our house during the BOS party. Some of this has involved word games, some of this has been completely untrue statements. The actual and complete line in the text sent to a third party who was at our house that night was "Okay. On my way with the restraining order; police to follow." If that's not a threat to bring the police, I don't know what is.

    Scott & Rachel’s Party Policies
Please read all of this. We welcome your questions and comments.

Beginning of Summer, End of Summer, Hot Foods. We love doing these big parties. They’re a huge amount of work but feel like a very worthwhile community event. We really, really appreciate the help that people give with them and are constantly looking for ways to make them a better experience for everyone involved.

This is an update to some parts of our practices and rules in order to keep things running well at our parties. This is not all the party information, just the things that we’d like to emphasize.

    The Important StuffCollapse )

    Addendum:

The main purpose of this post is to protect the parties and our ability to keep holding the parties. Just about every line in the original post is a response to real issues that have come up.

Codes of conduct are necessary for organizations. What we have are large but still private parties and we don't think that we need a party code of conduct for our guests. (People are free to disagree with us about that.) What we'd like to see is people self-regulating their interactions as responsible adults, and telling us when that is not working out.

There are people to whom we have not replied directly or addressed their specific concerns. Responding to this situation has taken up an incredible amount of time and energy, and both roozle and I have needed to focus on what we saw as the core issues here. Other issues certainly exist, and may be addressed at another time.

Baitcon Ice Cream Flavors: Currantly Stout
This ice cream is flavored with Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout and Black Currants and is possibly the best beer flavored ice cream ever. Even some beer haters like it.

Beginning of Summer - Party Recap
So, we had this party on Saturday.

First thing to say is that after talking with concerned people, Judah Sher will no longer be invited to our parties. For more detail on that, please talk to roozle or me. Sometime soon there will be another post about certain aspects of this situation, as well as general party behavior and safety.

Besides that issue, it was a great party. Much thanks to everyone who attended, and who made it great by bringing delicious food, helping with trash & recycling hauling, replenishing supplies, grilling, driving party guests to & from Oak Grove, and running other errands. Super thanks to weegoddess who did days of prep help and cleaning.

Thanks to everyone who did fire performing -- that’s something we look forward to -- and special thanks to sariel for her fabulous DJing in addition to fire performing.

If anyone has photos or videos of the party or the fire performance that I can link to, please send those links along.

And of course there is the Lost & Found:
    Clear plastic 6L/6Qt container
Kid shirt, red, “B is for Boba Fett”
Kid shirt, white turtleneck, name tagged Madeline Britton
Whole Foods tote bag - Las Vegas
    Pink towel
    Blue towel
    Yellow towel
    Mauve towel

Beginning of Summer Party, now with special theme
Here's a final reminder about our Beginning of Summer Party on Saturday, June 21 from 2PM until Whenever.

There's a special theme added to the party, which is Welcome Back Lori & Jonathan, who have sold their house in Pennsylvania and are now fully back in Massachusetts. So make sure to congratulate them.

Reminder - Beginning of Summer Party - June 21, 2014
Just a quick reminder that our annual Beginning of Summer Party will be on Saturday, June 21 from 2PM until Whenever.

We provide swimming pool and two hot grills. This is a pot-luck event so while we'll have some grillables and other food, people should bring food to share, particularly if there's something they'd like to have grilled.

As always, we'll be grateful for help in all aspects of party running. These include changing over trash and recycling, replenishing table goods, and shuttling people from & to the local T station.

After dark there will be fire performance plus DJ Purple. Fire performers should discuss who'll be fire marshals during other people's performances. Also, bring your music for DJ Purple to play while you perform.

RSVPs appreciated, hope to see you in 2 weeks!

Reminder - Beginning of Summer Party - Saturday, June 21
This is a reminder about our annual Beginning of Summer Pool and Barbeque Party on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 2PM until whenever in Melrose, MA. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.

News Flash: The folks who haven't claimed Lost & Found items from Hot Foods or parties even longer ago than that are encouraged to visit the exciting and picturesque Lost & Found table in the front living room and reclaim their stuff.

As most of you already know, the party is likely to be Very Crowded. So we're encouraging people with young children to attend on the early side. And as always, we're looking for folks who'd like to volunteer to help with grill and kitchen stuff, trash and supply changeover, T station shuttle duty, etc. It takes a lot of work to run these parties and we really appreciate whatever help we can get.

Feel free to bring acoustic musical instruments so that group music may happen. Once it's dark out, there will be firespinning. Firespinners should contact me for planning this part of the festivities, particularly about being fire marshal and having a number of people to be fire safeties while others are spinning. If there are drummers who wish to have a drum circle to accompany the firespinners, please let me know.

    The Standard Party Disclaimers:
We'll provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and general beverages & munchies, plus two hot grills and a swimming pool. Please feel free to bring whatever food or beverage you'd like to share. Alcohol will be present, please enjoy responsibly. Well-behaved and supervised children are welcome, but be aware that the house is not at all kidproof. Children must be supervised by a parent or other specific caregiver in the pool area at all times. A bathing suit or reasonable equivalent is required; our neighbors are mundane and can see into the pool area.

The main bedroom upstairs will be quiet space for nursing mothers and other folks who need a few minutes of less crowd and noise. This is not kid play space or romantic space. For the comfort and enjoyment of all attending, we ask for thoughtful and appropriate control to be exerted over the behavior of children. Please be aware of what your kids are doing, and how it may be affecting other people at the party. If this is likely to be difficult, consider leaving them at home with a babysitter. One indoor-only cat is in residence, medicate yourselves as needed.

Please do not cross-post or forward this invite. If you'd like to bring friends from off-list, please let us know and be sure to introduce them to us when they arrive. Make sure that they're folks who will be comfortable with a geek/pagan/poly crowd.

Parking Info: On-street parking is readily available all around our area, but Melrose has become very strict about the No Parking On-Street After 2AM rule and now will ticket cars. Waivers are available but they require one to be filled out for each separate car. We'll have a stack of waiver forms and would prefer to deliver them to the police station earlier rather than later in the evening.

Please avoid parking on the little side street by our house and be considerate of the neighbors, especially late at night. In particular, when leaving late at night if your car or bike has loud pipes, please resist the temptation to show them off. We value having a peaceable relationship with our neighbors. Likewise, when watching the firespinning please stay off the neighbors' lawns. There is no smoking anywhere on the property. Crash space is only available by special arrangement.

    Hope to see you there!

Question for iOS app developers and Mac users
I'm playing around with an RFduino (have done some machine control projects with Arduinos Uno and Mega) and am interested in developing various things that I can control with Bluetooth from my iphone. This sends me down the rabbit hole of iOS programming, for which one really wants to have a Mac. I've been a pc user largely due to Solidworks only running on Windows. (Yes, one can run a virtual machine and have Windows on a Mac. I see that as the worst of both worlds, having to pay for Micro$oft's crapware to run on hardware that costs twice as much. We can discuss this separately.) So now I'm looking at how to get into the Mac game with the minimum of aggravation and financial hit.

Thus, the question is what's the best way to find a decent used Mac suitable for running Xcode5, and what features are Must Have with a Mac?

    Edit
Thanks to everyone who replied! The best option now appears (at least for starters) to use a cloud-based Mac service. In the short to medium term it's way cheaper than buying another computer, and it'll give me a good opportunity to see what my Mac needs really are.

Hot Foods Party - Parking Update
Just a reminder that the Hot Foods Party is Saturday, February 22 from
2PM until Whenever. The snow is slowly melting and there should be
plenty of parking around our block.

However, there's still enough snow that it's somewhat slushy and
narrow-street parking, so please be safe, be considerate of our
neighbors, and park as close to the curb as possible.

Consider dropping passengers off in front of our house and then finding
a parking spot, so they don't need to climb over the snowbanks when
    leaving the car.

    See you soon!

This is a reminder that the Hot Foods Party will be at our house on Saturday, February 22 from 2PM until Whenever. (See previous entries for full details.)

And as always, RSVPs are appreciated though not required.

    Hot Foods Party
This is a reminder about our annual Hot Foods Party on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 2PM until whenever. RSVPs are appreciated but not required. If you need directions, just ask.

As most of you already know, the party is likely to be Very Crowded. We encourage people with young children to come on the early side. Note that the house is not at all kidproof. For the comfort and enjoyment of all attending, we ask for parents to please be aware of what their kids are doing and how it may be affecting other people at the party. If this is likely to be difficult, consider leaving them at home with a babysitter. One indoor-only cat is in residence, medicate yourselves as needed. She'll be locked away for most of the evening.

We're looking for folks who'd like to volunteer to help with pre-party setup as well as during-party kitchen stuff, trash and supply changeover, T station shuttle duty, etc. It takes a lot of work to run these parties and we really appreciate whatever help we can get.

We'll have lots of (clearly labeled) hot and spicy food, but also plenty of non-hot yummy stuff for our friends who lack asbestos palates. Please feel free to bring whatever food or beverage you'd like to share. Alcohol will be present for those of legal drinking age, please enjoy responsibly. Given the current legal climate we’re serious about the drinking age and anyone under 21 found with alcohol will be asked to leave the party, with their parents asked to remove them if necessary.

The main bedroom upstairs will be quiet space for nursing mothers and other folks who need a few minutes of less crowd and noise. It is not space for children to play in.

Please do not cross-post or forward this invite. If you'd like to bring friends from off-list, please ask first. Make sure that they're folks who will be comfortable with a geek/pagan/poly crowd. If you do bring or invite people who we haven't met before, please make the effort to introduce them to us.

On-street parking is readily available all around our area, but Melrose is very strict about the No Parking On-Street After 2AM rule and now will ticket cars. Waivers are available but they require one to be filled out for each separate car. We'll have a stack of waiver forms and will need to deliver them to the police station by mid-evening. Please avoid parking on the little side street by our house and be considerate of the neighbors, especially late at night. In particular, when leaving late at night if your car or bike has loud pipes or audio, please resist the temptation to show them off. We value having a peaceable relationship with our neighbors. There is no smoking anywhere on the property.

Crash space is only available by special arrangement for out of town guests. Please make sure that you're able to return home if you haven’t made advance arrangements with either sunspiral or roozle for crash space.

    Hope to see you there!
